Crazy...mata has a good point. If people want to live longer there are ways. "Tweaking" things is going to make a mess. Look at the ideas of cloning and such. I can imagine the first human to be cloned to be the picture of a guy really high on PCP. All really scary thoughts to me. If someone wants to live longer, all they have to do is take care of themself.

Excellent post. Its like the story about the Chofetz Chaim. A guest at his house asked where is your nice furniture, so he said where is yours. To whic the guest responded I am only passing thru. The Chofetz Chaim said so am I.

Good questions. What my Rabbi meant by living each week like it were his last is he builds his week around his highest priorities. For example he spends quality time with each one of his family members, says nice things to others, does kind deeds etc. If we feel like we have all the time in the world we may not make that extra phone call or say/do that nice thing. Living this way usually leaves us with regret.

If you know that your life will be extended, there are practical implications - you need to save more money, you may have several careers. It's easy to say live each week/day as if it were your last - but if you really knew it was...wouldn't you be less careful about spending money knowing you didn't have to save for old age? wouldn't you be less worried about taking time off from work? would you bother going shopping for clothes that you aren't going to need? nice blog by the way.
